Commercial Tobacco Isn't

NATIVE Tobacco Project

The NATIVE Tobacco Project, a program of the United Indian Health Services’ Tribal Public Health Division, has been supported by the California Tobacco Prevention Program for 35 years. The project’s work focuses on reducing commercial tobacco-related illness and premature death among  American Indian and Alaska Native communities in Humboldt and Del Norte counties, in partnership with community members, Tribal members, and Tribal councils.

The NATIVE Tobacco Project is focusing on:

Promoting Kick It California: Guide community members toward dedicated quitting services.

Leading in-person classes: Provide direct, hands-on quitting support within the community.

Growing C.O.R.E. coalition: Recruit members to guide initiatives with local insights.

Unite tribal and non-tribal programs: Foster collaborative partnerships for regional tobacco prevention.

Educate Del Norte and Humboldt: Share commercial tobacco risks and quitting resources across both counties.

Honor traditional tobacco: Distribute newsletters contrasting sacred tobacco use with harmful commercial vaping and smoking.

Empower youth and advocates: Train C.O.R.E. and T.A.G. to use media and storytelling for tribal outreach.

Integrate wellness initiatives: Embed commercial tobacco prevention into holistic community health efforts.

Protect outdoor spaces: Partner with local entities to establish commercial tobacco-free outdoor policies.

The NATIVE Tobacco Project successfully achieves its objectives through the implementation of comprehensive tobacco prevention education, community organizing initiatives, and policy activities, thereby fostering social norm changes that promote a commercial tobacco-free community.

The NATIVE Tobacco Project staff traveled to Sacramento to participate in the annual Information & Education Days organized by the American Heart Association’s Tobacco Endgame Center for Organizing and Engagement. This dedicated travel allowed the team to hold vital legislative discussions with state representatives, advocating directly for the health and sovereignty of California’s tribal communities
